It's been a long time since the last time we've been able to write up one of these reports. Why? These Japanese charts haven't been too friendly to PSP fanboys...Thankfully, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has changed all of that, resulting in quite an impressive showing for the PSP last week in Japan. Let's take a look at the numbers:
1. Pokémon Diamond (DS) - 209,379 / 2,329,227
2. Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops (PSP) - 178,370 / *NEW*
3. Pokémon Pearl (DS) - 164,670 / 1,931,445
4. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) - 154,107 / 3,771,128)
5. Wii Sports (Wii) - 152,756 / 471,229)
The PSP also sold an impressive amount of hardware. Sure, not as much as either the DS or the Wii, but isn't that expected by now? The PSP represents the strongest part of Sony's three-pillar strategy:
1. DS Lite: 485,584
165,876 (51.88%)2. Wii: 279,277
171,040 (158.02%)3. PSP: 138,588
89,626 (183.05%)4. PS3: 76,882
5,940 (8.37%)5. PS2: 46,209
8,479 (22.47%)Look at that surge of demand for PSP. It shows you that as long as interesting software continues to come out on our beloved handheld, gamers will rush out and buy it.

Let's hope this performs better than the PSP's "Previous Savior" - GTA.
I think DS lite sales are sooo ridiculous that the charts retitled: The DS Lite AND the OTHERS
I bet Sony is praying that the Wii doesn't become Nintendo's other gimmick. Just like the DS OR IT's GAME OVER!

@pixelator
Remember next year there is Final Fantasy 7: Crisis core and Final Fantasy Tactics. So if nothing else we'll have another 2 weeks like this, haha! Personally, if there was anything I wanted on the psp, it would be a Castlevania which follows in the footsteps of c:sotn.

Good to see a sales surge (and that the PSP sales still *can* surge in Japan). Troubling it took this long for the platform to outperform the nearly-defunct 5 year old PS2.
Hopefully this trend will continue, because these 'signs of life' are pretty important when publishers pick which systems to make games for.
It's amazing that the DS can continue to consistently sell 200-400K+ week after week. I mean, I always figured the DS would sell better in Japan, but wow.

They must use the DS for everything pixelator. I could see that glossy white DS making pretty good toilet paper if you had the money to burn. :D
And the shape would lend itself to a decent coaster.

I agree with this. My friend who always said that he would never buy a PSP when he saw my MGS Portable Ops told me that he would buy one soon.
