This Christmas is proving quite fruitful for homebrewers. Custom firmware 3.02 has all the functionality of Sony's official release, but can also play ripped PSX games. News is spreading that Sony's latest, 3.03, which introduced a few new security measures, has already been cracked. For clarification purposes, this doesn't mean that you'll be able to run homebrew on 3.03. Nor does this mean you can downgrade from 3.03. However, homebrew-enabled PSPs can revel in the potential to emulate 3.03 in the future.

Yippeee! This is great news... only because SONY will be forced to release another firmware upgrade.. but maybe 3.xx will have actual features in it as opposed to just "security revisions..."

Wow, with recent posts pspfanboy web site has become an official advocate of piracy. Well at least there is less crap about "poor homebrewers who just want to make things on PSP".
Homebrew is all about stealing games and that is the only reason why these guys are cracking PSP. Do you really think that Alex dude spending all this time just so that some kid can write another crappy pac-man game? And that hurts PSP and i wish this web site at least stopped gloating over every time PSP hacked.

We report the news... even if it isn't good news. I don't see us providing links to ISOs, or even describing in full detail how to install homebrew and emulators on the system. If you don't think this is newsworthy, then feel free to turn a blind eye--I'm sure Sony won't feel the same way about these recent events.

I have no problem about the newsworthiness of the post, just the tone.
I take issue with multiple posts pretending that decrypting these firmwares have any purpose other than playing pirated games. The majority of the homebrew scene is geared towards piracy. Stop sugar coating these posts as being a benefit to legitimate homebrewers.
And by the way, Andrew, I generally enjoy your writing -- call this constructive criticism, nothing personal.

heres a scarry look into the future, when sony gives up on security for firmware for the psp, and decides to crate the psp2 with appeal to the public, stronger hard ware; etc... and comes shipped with firmware non compatable to the first psp with no real security holes :O scarry day scarry day, but then again, i remember when 2.50 was uncrackable and nothing could ever beat it, it would just probably be hacked and downgraded, so bring it on sony

lmao, why don't they stop? You eat a lot of mushrooms, boy? That's like saying.. lets get rid of all the cops, because people still murder, rob and rape others. It's pointless right? I mean, If I went to your house and took all your stuff, the next time you'd buy a stronger lock, but lets say I robbed you again, then you'd probably set up a security system, but lets say i robbed you again, then you'd probably stand by your door with a shot gun

I'm sick of hearing "They only crack it to steal games" because that's a total load. There are a ton of decent and LEGAL homebrew apps out there that can't even be used, some of my favorites being universal remotes. My friends that have an Xbox 360 used to get so pissed off when their rig started freaking out and they couldn't figure it out because I appeared to just be playing a game. But seriously, that's a damned useful application, control everything from your psp. Not to mention those that let you use it as a PDA as well. So the majority DO decide to take the dishonest course and steal games. People also mod chip PS2s, Sony can't really stop that. They also download movies on the internet. Sony can certainly try to stop that, but they can't. Just like a guy who points a gun at a store clerk to steal money, instead of using it to hunt food or just recreational purposes. Or a guy who uses a hacksaw to cut a bike chain instead of build something. It's just symbolic of human nature, we can use any tools for good or for bad, it's up to us. More people would rather get free games than expand the limitless potential functionality of this awesome machine. That's no reason to take the hammer from the carpenter because you THINK he'll use it to hurt someone instead of build a house.
