Karl Jeffrey, CEO of Climax Studios, talked to GI.biz about the future of the PSP, and he thinks its pretty bleak. Climax, responsible for the development of over two dozen Sony titles, such as the ATV games, thinks that Sony is simply not doing enough to reinvigorate the now-slowing PSP market. "We're sitting here thinking about what Sony is going to do to get the platform back on track and we're not hearing much from them."
It's distressing to see one of Sony's development partners express such fear and uncertainty for the platform. "Personally, I love it as a platform to develop for, it's very powerful and it's a great machine," Jeffrey said. But it's very disappointing at the moment when you look at the installed base and the sales of the games that are out there; it's not a compelling prospect for many publishers."
Jeffrey believes that publishers will soon abandon the system, but predicts that a PSP redesign and downloadable games will help reverse the negative momentum. Too bad Sony continues to deny the possibility of a new PSP, and won't allow downloads without a PS3 (for now). Sony... what are you doing?!

I have to strongly disagree with at least part of the message here.
First off, as a developer, this guy should know better than this. You don't get Sony to do better by shaming them in the press, or threatening them with fewer publishers. If I'd bitched about Nintendo or Sony to a major media source while I was at any of the companies I used to work for, my ass would've been out on the street in a second - as well it should be.
Second, sales are not as high as the DS, and Sony certainly could be doing a better job of marketing, but I still don't see the bottom dropping out of PSP hardware sales - and Best Buy recently posted some promising data on two PSP games in the top 10, beating the two DS games there, as well. With PS3 connectivity and the recent spate of great games, I disagree that 'nothing' is happening with the PSP.
Lastly, will people give the redesign and price drop a frigging REST already? No company would cop to that, especially prior to the biggest buying season of the year. That'd be a great way to ensure your sales really DID fall through the floor (who would buy a $199 old style PSP when a newer model or a cheaper pricetag was just around the corner??). Nintendo certainly didn't let on about the Lite or Phat price drop until it was practically in stores... I not only expect Sony to do the same, but I *want* them to.
In short, we're not going to know about either new pricing or design until it happens, and until then the games have kicked ass this year, there's the GPS & camera, PS3 connect, PS1 downloads, new features in 3.0 and more cool games coming down the pipe. What the hell is so awful about all that..?

The future for the psp is worring. Sony has lost a lot of momentum with competition from the ds lite. Bad marketing is also at fault with those fucking dust ball commercials. With a price drop, focus on software the psp still has a chance at a bright future.
Sony does seem to have fixed the marketing problem as of late, with a focus on actual game play. But releasing a entertainment pack at $250 is a joke. I figure with the PS3 losses, Sony can't afford to lower the price of the PSP. Or maybe they are trying to milk the holiday shoppers with price drop Q1 or Q2 next year.
It's a sad state of affairs when such a capable piece of hardware seems to be losing developer support.

I dont get the whole redesign thing either. Is that really gonna do any help? Its not like the PSP really needs a redesign like the DS Phat did.

Well yeah , maybe a redesign and a pricedrop would boost the sellings up a bit , but not that much , they need to make much batter comercials , and not craps like this , also , make more usage of the hardware capabilities , and not like that crap PS3 to PSP game download :x

sony needs to wake the fuck up.....cause if they don't the ps3 will be toppled by the 360 and wii, and the ds will topple the psp....
Sony is hurting in thier pocketbook and is hopeing that blueray will save them...
Hopefully they will see what they are doing and come to thier senses before it's too late and thier the last one picked to play on the team....

The hell is this developer talking about??!! makes me wonder wether or not this guy has been playing double agent for Nintendo and Sony at a hefty fee. Has this guy even done any research on the psp's recent lineup of games??
the holiday lineup:
Ace Combat X, Gunpey, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Jeanne d’Arc, Kingdom of Paradise 2, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Metal Slug Collection, Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, Valhalla Knights and Winning Eleven 2007.’
again, what da heck was this guy talking about?? its mind boggling how you can be working in this industry and still don't know squat!

Qtrain I think if sony continues on its present course this holiday season will be the turning point where the DS cements its lead for good. Most of the games you mention began production about a year ago, months before the DS was available in America. I had this conversation with my brother who is a DS fanboy if the DS is so hot why are there so few games being released for it this quarter? Climax isn't the only company to complain about the psp, not too long ago EA mentioned that they may/are shifting resources to the DS.

One of the biggest problems with the PSP is the astound degree of abilities the hardware has... which sony limits to oblivion. Many people would would happily buy a PSP brand new won't because the new hardware revisions can't be downgraded to run homebrew applications... so they search for weeks at good will or second hand shops for an old revision board so they can run whatever they want. Sony has fought hard against it rather than marketing the product the way it should have been marketed... to much effort in the wrong areas.
