The recent news of Sony getting a new ad agency couldn't have come sooner because things are getting worse by the week for the PSP in Japan. Maybe this new agency can somehow spin this mess into something positive. However, this ridiculously huge increase in DS Lite sales most likely is due to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which sold about 1.5 million copies combined. And I thought that whole Pokemon craze was over years ago.- DS Lite: 274,389
134,554 (96.22%)- PS2: 31,992
681 (2.08%)- PSP: 25,319
2,201 (9.52%)- Xbox 360: 2,195
1,086 (97.93%)- GBA SP: 1,811
334 (15.57%)- Game Boy Micro: 1,103
83 (7.00%)- Gamecube: 523
240 (31.45%)- DS Phat: 253
63 (19.94%)- GBA: 10
10 (50.00%)- Xbox: 3
5 (62.5%)The DS Lite outsold the PSP by nearly 250,000 units. Seriously, that's not a typo. Apparently, Sony seems to think a price drop is not what it needs at this point, but thinks we need more than 100 games shoved down our throats by the end of the year. However, at this point, I believe Sony should focus on quality over quantity. If they can give us a dozen worthwhile games by year's end, I'll be a happy camper.

Hardware sales aren't that important at this phase. The Japan DS success, eyebrow-raising though it may be, isn't really pushing down the PSP hardware sales that much.
It's the GAME sales I care more about, and those that need the most work. Hopefully, the highly anticipated titles set to debut between now and Q2 2007 will help revamp consumer interest and in turn spur more developer innovation. Without people buying the PSP games, fewer publishers will pay the development costs because the returns won't warrant it.
I'm going to say this again, Sony. Hope you're listening.
1). $149.99 basic pack. Just do it.
2). New colors for the USA market.
And for 2007,
3). Redesigned PSP w/ 8GB internal: $199.99 basic pack.
4). MORE new colors for all markets (red, blue, etc).
I tell ya, Sony - It doesn't get much simpler. I'd also throw in a marketing revamp and some seminars on How to Keep One's Mouth Shut for your managers and execs - but we know you guys can only do so much.

Dear retards.
Ds hasnt 100 titles, what they got is a low proce and ubberhyped games about famous tv series.Nothing on earth sells more than that.
PSP has more games but no one has pikachu on it.
A low price for the kids and game using famous cartoon characters will totally increase it sells, and if im not wrong that chart just says PSP sales are increasing, and it doesnt have pikachu or FF(yet).
I think is doing great but a price drop so parents can get them for their kids and maybe doing a loco roco tv show on wb kids will totally own the DS,big time.

I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to say Granavatar. I think the DS/Lite was also selling insanely before the launch of Pokemon (of which the games are popular in their own right independent of the show). I'm not sure a Loco Roco show on the CW (WB is dead) would help, a lot of parents aren't going to buy their kids a PSP for that much for one game when they could easily break it.
I'm not sure a Loco Roco TV show on the CW would change what's going on with these Japanese sales either.

I haven't sat down and counted but from the looks of things, the DS has far more games than the PSP, and definitely more than 100 (in what looks like the case for both systems). Know what you're talking about before you start spewing stuff you don't know anything about.

My GOD, what did English ever do to you?
And at the risk of dismaying the hardcore PSP fanatics, please note the SMALL DISCREPANCY between the 'increase' between the DS and PSP sales this week. The PSP went up over 2K units, the DS went up OVER 130K.
That's the kind of little detail that tends to club you about the head like a baby seal.

I think the reason why they aren't dropping the price is because they're already losing money on every system sold, and they're going to be taking a big hit with the PS3. Sony has alot of money, and they want to keep some of it.

Unfortunately, hardware sales are a big part in software sales and vice versa. I believe hardware sales are an indicator of what the consumers think of the software. If there's not a lot of interesting software, you'll see that in the hardware's sales numbers. And that's exactly what's happening with the PSP. Once Sony releases some interesting games, both numbers will rise. Just look at what happened this week with the DS Lite and Pokemon.

When the PSP was first anounced ( 03-04 cant really remember ) they satted that even if they sell 30 million + units , even than the PSP will be a worthy sistem , and the WILL make a nother one . For this they need 5 years ( an everege generation ) , but bealive me , in 3 years at least 40million + units will be soled . DONT start bashing me , I know this was just a rumor , but seeing that the Gamecube , like a home console sold only 21 million units in 5 years , than the PSP is doing stellar . And lets dont forgett that there are American and Europ game charts , which are never here . My bets are , that untill like 2009 they will be like 50-60 million PSPs soled , and 70-80 million DSs . And even with like 20 million differences , the PSP eate lots of the handheld market , and Microsoft is not even in the game .

Of course hardware unit sales affect game sales ultimately, but right now, the PSP needs better game sales. Its games aren't selling to match its fairly good penetration and installed userbase of 15-17 million (maybe more).
Hopefully, the new games coming will help both, but in order for Sony to really kick ass this season, they need to follow the steps outlined above.

The PSP doesn't entirely lack innovative games: Loco Roco, Gitaroo Man, Mercury 1 & 2, etc. Field Commander isn't innovative - it's a fairly standard turn based strat. I think you mean 'original' or 'exclusive' which I agree, the PSP could use more platform-specific titles.
...Even if they're new editions of existing games like Katamari or Medal of Honor (or Mario Kart on the DS, for example), the PSP needs to buck the reputation of PS1 and PS2 hand-me-downs.

The psp has been selling at a constant rate of 20-25k units a week in japan. Regardless of how well the DS does in a particular week. The DS has been jumping from between 50k-250k a week (lately 150-250k), yet never affects the number of PSPs sold. Now, if the psp was taking big hit in sales everytime the ds sales went up, then I'd be worried.

As far as the number of games on each system, I've looked at different web sites and both have about the same amount of games (about 250). The one thing that bothers me about the amount of sales of the DS Lite is that most people I know are "upgrading" to the DS Lite from the DS Phat or replacing their broken hinged DS.
Another thought: how many times can Nintento regurgitate Mario and Pokemon into the same games and call them something different, That's not innovation. But I guess it works, cause my nine & six year old boys like it, I'd rather play Dark Mirror or SoCom on the couch while my wife reads a book.

The PSP price is not a real issue. The lack of innovative games that's the real problem. Portable is not a small version of the big consoles. Make less games but with more quality. The major part of the PSP games are sequels of PS2 games. Wheres innovation like Field Commander???
