Okay, the above headline may be a bit misleading. Yes, LEGO Star Wars II did sell more than one million units worldwide in its first week of release, but those numbers include the eight current-gen consoles the game was published for. Still, that's no number to ignore. The game, which was released Sept. 12, is now the best-selling family game of the year.
"There's definitely something for everyone in LEGO Star Wars II, and the sales and reviews so far are proving it," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "This is the type of fun, accessible game everyone in the family can enjoy. It appeals to so much more than just the traditional gaming audience."
Thankfully, LEGO Star Wars II, isn't a crappy licensed game that has sold on its name alone, like a few recent games I will not name. The game has averaged about an 84-percent rating on Gamerankings, which I'm happy to say is much higher than the DS' 60-percent rating.

I don't know why people like Lego StarWars so much, aside from people's propensity of liking crappy games and StarWars, that is. Am I alone here? Is this going to be one man's battle? Who else just doesn't like these games? Come, my brothers, and let us make a stand! I have a dream that one day upon the great blog of Joystiq, both Lego StarWars lovers and Lego StarWars dislikers will unite in the common bond of gamer fellowship, where all platforms are created equal, where we are no longer fanboys nor fangirls, but a kind of hybrid fanhermaphrodite. No game ration without representation! Give me Stars, or Give me Death!

i'll admit the game is monotonous, but in a "ooh, they give me LEGO pieces for blowing up stuff brainlessly" way.
the tons of unlockables and hidden little gags save this game from being merely a LEGO/Dynasty Warriors/Star Wars universe game, and instead make it more like a LEGO/Dynasty Warriors/Star Wars universe/Where's Waldo game.
...
ok fine, the game is dumb.

Oh man who thought of pairing lego and star wars. In a freakin video game? No way. I think i'd prefer a REAL star wars game, with real people, instead of random lego people walking around with blue, green and red tubes....

That's the problem - there ARE no more 'real' Star Wars games... They've all been done to absolute death. What's new? A Twi'lek adventure? A failed MMO? Another sequel to Knights of the Old Republic?
The Lego SW games wouldn't be so popular if it weren't for the kintetic feedback gameplay 'gimmick' of blowing up, building and generally mucking around with the lego pieces. It's just plain fun to blow up lego stuff, hearing the clicking of the little bits, picking up the various colors and jumping, lifting, maneuvering within a Lego reality. The colors, tactile sense of lego interaction and amusing/cute humor just work.
The point is, this isn't just another boring, 'let's see what other milking of the SW universe we can come up with' actioner with overdone graphics and melodramatic storyline. It's light, fun and satisfying in that very primal playing-with-legos sort of way.
In short, you have to play this to appreciate it. I never realized how entertaining the original was until a friend brought the PS2 version over and I was hooked.
