Sandra Lee would be proud. She wanted a portable system that could play all your PlayStation games and wasn't so small for her massive gorilla-like hands. Thankfully, Brian Gardiner has created his "palmPS2" which takes many of the same parts of the original PlayStation 2 and places it into a somewhat terrifying portable device. I'm impressed, but I'll stick with my PSP for PS2-quality gaming on the go.

It is amusing you think that the PSP is a substitute for a portable playstation 2 and that you think it is capable of delivering "PS2-quality gaming"

Daniel D,
Why are you amused? Many mainstream critics find that the PSP often rivals the PS2 in gameplay, graphics, and overall experience.
Don't forget the PSP is 16x9 portable, with a extremely rich feature set. It is the creme de la creme of portable devices, and in my humble opinion the best gaming system to date.

2 finds it amusing because he's a Nintendo troll, just like the others lurking here.
In order to see the PSP for what it is, you have to recognize its limits compared to the PS2. Its processor is still underclocked to conserve battery, it obviously lacks a second analog stick and the display, while great in its own right, still isn't like watching something on a big TV.
That said, the PSP fits in a tight jean pocket and is garnering a pretty solid library with a few good original games that capitalize well on integrated wireless. No cables, no need for connecting to a TV, no need to buy a wireless add-on. It sacrifices surprisingly little to bring the PS2 level game experience to the 'big small' screen.
I also think it's the best handheld game system to date, but that doesn't mean it's perfect, either.

Then you haven't been looking around much:
http://www.benheck.com/ (currently down, but this guy has turned nearly EVERY console into a handheld system)
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/26/fan-made-portable-gamecube-is-a-beast/ (not exactly a pretty mod, but it gets the job done...)
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/06/say-hello-to-the-xboys-big-daddy/ (hardly a mod at all, but it is still an Xbox that can be played anywhere... I think...)

It's not that the PSP is a substitute for a portable PS2, it's that the expertise and time needed to piece one of those things together is miles beyond the normal PSP user. In fact, this guy is the only one I've seen who succesfully converted a TV console to a portable divice. Even then, Gardiner's portable PS2 is not a very feasable portable system; he himself states the the "battery life is pathetic."

I have to agree with Daniel D about the PSP not being a suitable subsitute for a portable PS2.
It's not about the hardware or the graphics. It's about the game library.

I'm sorry but that is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. lol Not to mention it looks uncomfortable as hell. Personally, I am happy with the PSP library so far.
Besides, why would you want to play the EXACT same games you can play at home? Isn't that the whole idea behind a PSP? Even the ports usually have a little twist to em'. There's not even a picture of this monstrsity actually working. Don't get me wrong, it's a good idea but not very practical.

Apparently the game library has nothing to do with sales, because the DS has fewer titles rated over 70% or 80% than the PSP according to Gamerankings, Metacritic, Gamespot, etc... It also has more bad games (sub-50, 40, etc.).
So much for DS Fanboy Myth #1: "PSP Has No Good Games." Tune in later today when some other DS troll will post something about how the PSP battery lasts 2 hours, or that UMDs eject at lethal velocity at the slightest touch.

It does not look as nice as his psone portable http://www.palmps2.com/palmpsone/index.html, though it does look smaller. I think it is an amazing piece of work. Looks plain but that is not what matters.

hey pix, stay cool man. we all be pspzzy fanboys in this hizzy.
i feel ya, cuz i just bought one of those pink DS systems because my wife wanted to play the new super mario bros. but it also looks like that's about 25-33% of the games either of us are interested in and i'm just now figuring this out.
my psp however has a growing stack of deeply satisfying games that keeps on growing. just one mans opinion.
besides. i can wait for the psp2 to get my ps2 download emulation on. this thing is,.... well, to each his own.
word.

That was uncalled for and unfounded. I was only comparing the PSP's library to the PS2's library. And if you're trying to tell me they're equal, then there's something fundamentally wrong with you.
As regards your DS Fanboy myth, it's really subjective. For me, there's only 1 game on the PSP that I really like(Valkryie Profile), and 4 that interest me in the slightest (MGS Acid, Acid 2, Megaman Maverick Hunter, Suikoden I+II).
That's not to say that it's a bad system or lacks a good gaming library. It just means that getting a PSP at this point doesn't make any sense for ME, as a consumer. I do plan on getting one someday, but not now.

@15: Sadly, we're not all PSP fanboys in this 'hizzy'. Lots of DS trolls, which is nothing compared to Joystiq, but it's still goddamned annoying to see constant sniping here by people who don't even own the thing.
@16: I don't know what you think was 'uncalled for and unfounded' but I'd love to see where you think I ever said the PSP library is equal to the PS2's.
Comparing the 1.5 year old PSP library to the 5 year old PS2 library is ridiculous. And since you can't put a PS2 in your pocket (even with this 'portable'), it's the closest thing we have to a true handheld PS2. Your same argument that it's 'no substitute' could be said of a DS compared to an N64 or Gamecube. Does the DS have as good a library as either of those two systems? Nope. Does that diminish the value of the DS in its own right? Nope.

Precisely. The PSP is not a substitute for the PS2, and the DS isn't a substitute for the N64. If I wanted to play PS2 or N64 games, the PSP and DS are not valid options, thus they are NOT substitutes.

Heh, some people are getting rather defensive about the first slew of comments... this isn't a criticism of the PSP, but it isn't PS2; comparable, perhaps, and also to a PSone. However, you yourselves, admit to this very logic, and then condemn someone else for merely opining the fact that PSP does not substitute a PStwo. Just because they don't always put a positive spin on the comparison, doesn't make them Nintendo trolls. Please, don't deceive yourselves into a self-righteous indignation.
I'd like a quasi-portable PS2, and that wouldn't replace my PSP; it would just fill in the void I harbour for a quasi-protable PS2. And no, the PSP wouldn't suffice in that capacity.
As for the actual device in question - not bad. I'd prefer just getting the Joytech 8-inch LCD for the PStwo.
"but i wanna know when sony will release an offical lcd screen for the pstwo like they did the psone. and will it look as good as the psp screen (in a 4:3 AR)" - alienclay
You can get the Joytech 8-inch screen, which is quite a nifty piece of work for the slim-line PStwo.

The original commenter was 'amusemed' by the idea of the PSP being capable of PS2 "quality" games... Then Blue made the comment that he only 'liked' one PSP game (and doesn't own a PSP). On a PSP site, that's what I call trolling.
Is a PSP an exact copy of a PS2 in portable form? No. Does it have good games? Yes. As many good games as a PS2? Of course not.
Is the palmPS2 cool? Totally. The guy did a great job with that thing, but it, like a PS2 with an LCD, isn't comparable to a PSP for portability. I might have to look into that 8" slimline PS2 screen, tho.
